Joan Miró i Ferrà (April 20, 1893 – December 25, 1983) was a catalan painter, sculptor and ceramicist born in Barcelona.

His work has been interpreted as surrealism.

Miró expressed contempt for conventional painting methods as a way of supporting bourgeois society .

He began drawing classes at the age of seven at a private school at Carrer del Regomir 13 .

His early modernist works include portait of vicent nubiola.

Miró created over 250 illustrated books.

Miró has been a significant influence on late 20th-century art, in particular the American abstract expressionist artists

In 1979 Miró received a doctorate honoris causa from the University of Barcelona .
